Costa Rica is known for its more than 1,100 km of coastline, stretching between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Its beaches are famous for their proximity to the rainforest, year-round warm waters, and free public access for all visitors.
1. Beaches of the Pacific Coast
This coast is very diverse and is divided into three main zones:
Guanacaste (North): Famous for its dry climate, tropical forests, and crystal-clear waters, this region boasts white and golden sands, such as the renowned Playa Conchal (composed of tiny crushed shells), and calm bays perfect for swimming.
Central Pacific: Beaches very close to San José, popular for their strong waves for surfing. Highlights include Manuel Antonio National Park and Jaco, surrounded by dense vegetation inhabited by monkeys and sloths.
South Pacific: A wilder and more biodiverse area. Here you'll find Marine Ballena (Whale's Tail) National Park, famous for its natural sandbar shaped like a whale's tail.
2. Beaches of the Caribbean Coast
The Costa Rican Caribbean is characterized by its vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, relaxed atmosphere, and some of the most beautiful tropical landscapes in the world:
White, black and gold sand: Beaches like Playa Cocles and Punta Uva have ideal waves for both surfing and snorkeling.
Reef ecosystems: The water is generally warmer and clearer, notable for its coral reefs and large number of palm trees and mangroves that reach almost to the sea.
3. General Characteristics
Public Access: By law in Costa Rica, all beaches are public and freely accessible; there are no private beaches. (However, you will find very discreet beaches and maritime areas where liberal (Swingers & OpenMind) or adult activities are practiced.)
Living Nature: The vast majority are bordered directly by the jungle or forest, and sightings of wildlife (iguanas, birds, monkeys) are common very close to the shore.
Wealth in Waves: Costa Rica is a world-renowned surfing destination, with more than 50 famous surfing spots.
